Hello All – not long to go now before our outdoor season starts!! We need some
sunshine and dry days, but the green looks in good condition – albeit very green!!
Early Season Tip:
I know a fair number of you have been playing indoors, either at Glebelands or short-
mat bowls at other local venues. As you move outdoors remember the Green will
feel exceedingly heavy for the first weeks. It’s always a good idea to do a few
stretches etc. before playing in order to avoid pulling muscles. Also, start off by
playing shorter jacks so as to build-up your strength and gradually regain your feel
for the outside game.
Your Committees’ have been meeting regularly and have been preparing the facilities for
the new season with general maintenance and a freshening up in places, hopefully you’ll
notice some small improvements.
Whilst 2024 Club Membership remains unchanged it has been necessary to raise some
of the Bar prices, but you’ll be pleased to know that a fair few of the beverage prices
remain ‘unchanged’, the main ones of course being the draft beer, lager and cider –
good news for the regulars!!
As has become our custom we plan a number of Social events through the season
starting with our season opener on Sun 21st April – a mixed friendly starting at 3pm.
So if you want to participate in that – which we hope you do – look for notices in the
Club and ensure you get your names entered on the Availability Sheets – everyone
whose name is entered can be assured of playing.
Here are some KEY DATES for your diary:
• Mon 15th April – Green Opening (to be confirmed with green keeper)
Members can start to roll-up for some early season practice
• Sun 21st April – Official Green Opening – Mixed friendly fixture (tbc)
• Sat 27th April – Mens Opening fixtures – MBA Div 2 vs Chepstow (A)

Other News
Also for your interest, 2024 is the Centenary Year of Monmouthshire Bowls Association.
There will be a few centenary events around the County through the summer but nothing is
as yet expected at Caldicot BC. We did offer our Club as a venue for any County fixtures but
dates could not be aligned. However note that the Ladies County Pairs Finals will be played
at Caldicot BC.
You might also be aware that there has been a major administrative change in Wales at
National level with the coming together of Mens and Ladies Associations to form a new
integrated Welsh Lawn Bowls national administration. How this impacts Welsh Bowls in
future remains to be seen but certainly there is no immediate impact at Club level for the
coming season.
Unfortunately there is one sad note to add. Several of you will know that in December one
of our lady members – Kay Harris – passed away after suffering a quite rapid, deteriorating
condition. Kay had been a prominent member of our Ladies section for a number of years
and always supported the Club’s activities wherever possible. Her funeral was well attended
by Caldicot BC members , our condolences and thoughts are with husband John. We
sincerely hope we will continue to see John at the Club this summer, playing or otherwise.
